Reddit is still one of the best places on the internet to ask a real question and get a real answer. It is also where repost bots farm karma, affiliate spammers pose as fellow shoppers, and a handful of communities exist mostly to spread conspiracy theories. If you want to filter your Reddit feed, you have two kinds of tools: the ones Reddit gives you, and the ones you add yourself. This guide covers both and explains when each one is enough.

What Reddit gives you out of the box

Reddit has two built-in controls that matter for your feed.

Mute a community

Muting a subreddit removes it from your Home and Popular feeds and stops Reddit from recommending it. You can mute from the community's own page (the menu next to the Join button) or manage your muted list in your account preferences. Menu locations shift between redesigns, but the feature has stayed.

Mute works well for one or two communities you never want to see. It does not scale. You have to find each subreddit first, usually after it has already annoyed you, and mute it by hand.

Block a user

Blocking an account hides its posts and comments from you and stops it from messaging you. Open the user's profile, use the menu, and choose Block.

That is the right tool for one person who is harassing you. It is the wrong tool for bots. Spam networks run many accounts, and new ones replace blocked ones. Blocking them one at a time is a chore that never ends.

What is missing

Reddit offers no feed-wide keyword filter for regular users, no way to subscribe to someone else's block list, and no shared list of known spam or bot accounts. Each user starts from zero and does all the work alone.

Three ways to filter a Reddit feed

1. Native mute and block. Free, built in, and it syncs across devices because it lives in your account. Good for a short list of specific annoyances. Manual, reactive, and one item at a time.

2. Keyword filtering. Hiding posts whose text matches phrases such as "use my referral" or "click here to claim" catches spam you have never seen before, from accounts nobody has listed yet. The trade-off is false positives, so the rules have to be specific.

3. Curated lists. Someone tracks the accounts and communities behind a problem, and you subscribe to their list. You benefit from work done once for everyone, and the list keeps changing after you subscribe.

Blokari combines the second and third methods and adds a per-post block button for the first.

How Blokari filters Reddit

Blokari is a browser extension that already filters YouTube, LinkedIn and X. Reddit filtering is live too, with four curated subscriptions:

  • Bot / Spam: repost bots, karma-farming communities, affiliate and dropship spam, and other automated accounts.
  • Misinformation: banned and quarantined subreddits known for conspiracy theories, anti-vaccine content and state propaganda. It also covers communities Reddit quarantined in 2022 for spreading disinformation about Russia's invasion of Ukraine. If that is your main concern, see our guide to blocking Russian propaganda on YouTube.
  • AI Content: subreddits flooded with AI-generated images and GPT-written posts published without disclosure.
  • Toxicity: banned and quarantined communities known for harassment, hate speech and doxxing.

The lists started with 57 seed accounts and communities, and curators add more through the review queue. Entries can be users (u/name) or subreddits (r/name), so one subscription covers both the poster and the place.

Every list page is public. Each one shows what the list targets, who curates it, a changelog of additions and removals, and how many appeals against the list were upheld or overturned. Listing is meant to be accountable, not final. You can browse all four Reddit categories next to the YouTube, LinkedIn and X ones in the category overview on the homepage.

Green, Yellow, Red: choose how strict to be

Blokari uses one slider for every platform. Each level includes everything in the level below it.

Green: blacklist only. Posts from accounts and communities on your subscribed lists are blurred and labelled. Click to reveal one. No keyword rules run at this level, so you see only matches someone deliberately listed.

Yellow: blacklist plus curator rules. Each Reddit subscription also carries keywords and patterns written by its curator. The Bot / Spam list, for example, matches phrases like "use my referral" and links carrying affiliate or ref= parameters. The AI Content list matches tell-tale lines such as "As an AI language model". On Reddit, matches at this level are still blurred rather than removed, so you can check what the rules catch.

Red: hide everything that matches. Posts matched by a list or a rule are removed from the feed entirely instead of blurred.

You can override the global level per subscription. Keep Toxicity on Red so it never appears, and leave AI Content on Green while you see what it catches.

If you also want AI-generated video gone, the YouTube side works differently: at the Red level, with an AI-slop subscription active, Blokari hides videos that YouTube itself labels as AI-generated. Our guide to blocking AI-generated YouTube channels covers it in detail.

Set it up in five minutes

  1. Install Blokari from the Chrome Web Store. It runs in desktop Chrome and other Chromium browsers that install from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Open Options → Subscriptions and switch on the Reddit lists you want. Starting with Bot / Spam alone is a sensible first step.
  3. Pick a level. Start on Green for a day to see what gets blurred, then move to Yellow or Red.
  4. Open Reddit. New and old Reddit both work. Matching posts are blurred or hidden as you scroll.
  5. Fine-tune as you go. Every post gets a small Block button that adds its author to your personal blacklist. The blur overlay has a whitelist button for anything caught by mistake. Whitelisted entries always win over lists.

Filtering happens on your device. The lists are downloaded to your browser and checked locally, so filtering keeps working when Blokari's servers are unreachable.

Free, and what the paid plans add

The full database, all four platforms and all Reddit subscriptions are free. The free plan syncs lists monthly and runs on one browser. Pro (€3/month) syncs daily and works on all your browsers. Business (€8/month) adds realtime sync and unlimited personal rules. Parental controls are free on every plan.

Mute what annoys you, subscribe to the rest

Reddit's mute and block are fine for a few named annoyances. They cannot keep up with bot networks, spam rings or the next quarantined subreddit. A curated list can, because someone else is already tracking them. Keep using mute for the odd community you dislike, and let Blokari handle the patterns.

If LinkedIn is your other problem feed, the same approach works there. See how to filter your LinkedIn feed.

FAQ

How do I hide a subreddit from my Reddit feed?

Reddit's own tool is Mute community: open the subreddit's menu and choose Mute, or manage the list in your account preferences. It hides that community from your Home and Popular feeds. To hide whole groups of subreddits at once, use a curated list in an extension such as Blokari.

Can I filter Reddit posts by keyword?

Reddit has no feed-wide keyword filter for regular users. Blokari adds one at the Yellow level: each Reddit subscription carries curator-written keywords and patterns, for example referral and affiliate-link spam in the Bot / Spam list.

Does Blokari work on old Reddit?

Yes. The Reddit content script handles both the current Reddit layout and old.reddit.com in a desktop browser. It does not work in the Reddit mobile app, because mobile apps do not run browser extensions.

Is Reddit filtering free?

Yes. All four Reddit subscriptions are included in the free plan. Pro (€3/month) adds daily list sync and use on all your browsers; Business (€8/month) adds realtime sync.

What if Blokari hides a post I wanted to see?

Blurred posts can be revealed with a click, and the overlay has a one-click whitelist button. Whitelisted users and communities are always shown, whatever list they appear on.
